Mazal Tov

Congratulations to Sheba, my youngest brother, who was just accepted to my own alma mater, the University of Pennsylvania! I'd like to open the comments section to unsolicited and potentially hilarious advice for a new pre-Freshman.

My best advice? If they don't let you have a microwave in the room, a Coffee Mate and an iron are your new best friends. The coffee maker heats water hot enough to make ramen, oatmeal, and pretty much anything instant you can add hot water to. The iron makes for a sort of hot plate in reverse and can thaw most pre-cooked things to the right temperature. It also makes for good grilled cheese, though it gets more melty than grilled. Make sure you put wax paper or aluminum foil between the iron and food, however, else you have a horrible mess.

Most dorms at least have a common area with a microwave, but unless you want you food to taste like popcorn, avoid it like the plague. Plus there is a certain amount of pride that comes from bucking the system and cooking your own food in your room.

Also, don't do drugs.

Such exciting news! I just learned today that freshmen are no longer allowed to live in Rodin. So yes, live in Stouffer :)
